Gasoline is a flammable and environmentally hazardous liquid, classified as a dangerous good under UN number 1203, packaging group II, according to the ADR agreement. Intuitively, it might seem that its transport must always be carried out with a fully marked vehicle, complete documentation, and the participation of a properly trained driver. However, in practice – depending on the context – the transport of gasoline may benefit from numerous exemptions provided for in ADR regulations.
Here are the most important cases and interpretations:
Pursuant to section 1.1.3.1 a (i) of the ADR, private individuals may transport up to 240 liters of gasoline in a transport unit in receptacles intended for retail sale, provided that:
A single receptacle does not exceed 60 liters. This means that, for example, transporting several jerricans of gasoline for household use does not require compliance with ADR regulations.
Companies may transport up to 333 liters of UN 1203 gasoline under exemption 1.1.3.6 – an exemption related to quantities carried per transport unit. In this case, neither the driver's training certificate nor full vehicle labeling are required, although other requirements, such as a transport document, packaging certification, and mixed loading prohibitions, still apply.
When gasoline is transported:
then the full ADR regulations must be applied, including:
- Vehicle marking: orange-coloured plates, placard (no. 3), environmentally hazardous substance mark.,
- Packaging: must be certified and comply with the packing instructions (P001) and special regulations (243, 534, 664),
- Documentation: transport document, instructions in writing, driver's training certificate,
Loading with other dangerous goods is prohibited unless the exemptions (7.5.2) are observed, for example, together with other goods from Class 3, but also, for example, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 7, and others.
The ADR exemption applies to fuel contained in:
– up to 1,500 liters per transport unit and up to 500 liters on a trailer (1.1.3.3 a).
🔹 Drivers and documentation obligations
If during carriage of gasolinewe cannot use any of the exemptions, the driver must:
